Your Career. Your Business. Own It.

Updated: Jun 28, 2023

Unlike other investments, where it’s a set-it-and-forget-it-and-watch-it-grow mindset, careers need proactive management.

After all, we've all invested thousands of dollars, time, and energy, not to mention sweat, stress, and anxiety to get that medical degree, right?

Think of your career as a business.

Similar to any business, a product (aka your career) needs to evolve to cater to market demands. There's branding and marketing that need to be done to attract its targeted customers, and a sales funnel to get the customer to eventually buy. All these require investments, time, energy,

and focus. It's unsustainable otherwise.

Careers are very much like that. The product is 'us.' Each of us needs to evolve, aka, through learning new skills, and acquiring new knowledge, so that we can evolve with the changing market.

We all need to market ourselves (eg, networking, social profiles, sending our CVs, etc) so that eventually, we can land that next growth stage in our careers.

Of course, in order to do that, we also have to 'sell' which means, we have to speak our value proposition, like during interviews.

5 telltale signs that it's time to take control of your career:

  • Are your skills up to date and evolving with the market? The best way is to gauge your salary. If it’s flatlining and not keeping up with inflation and industry standards, it’s time to re-evaluate.

  • Where are your current experiences and skills taking you? Remember that while employers provide training, it’s aligned with their company goals. Are your skills and experiences still aligned with your personal and career aspirations?

  • Feeling stuck? This could be unable to move because your pension is tied to staying with the company. Or perhaps, you’ve built your social circle around work. Letting go may be hard, but it may be a necessary step for growth.

  • Not recognizing that a job is not a career. You are simply doing the same job, day in, day out. It’s continuous and you can’t see where it even starts or ends. In time, this job becomes your sole career and is heavily dependent on specific skills that may become obsolete faster than you know.

  • Beware of the 'Autopilot Mode.' It’s comfortable. It’s easy. It’s giving up that power to manage your own career trajectory. In time, it's becoming stagnant and overlooking/missing many potential opportunities for growth, learning, and advancement.

What's your career strategy? Like any investment, it needs to be protected. It needs to continue to grow and evolve.

You are the CEO of your career. How's your business coming along?
